Overall Aims of the post:

To be responsible and accountable for the management of the theatre services in the absence of the Theatre Manager in order to achieve the results required by the hospital; through effective direction and control of staff and the efficient use of the resources allocated.

Principle Accountabilities:

  • To be aware and adhere to the policies and procedures as set down by the organisation, including regulations regarding Health & Safety, COSHH, NMC Codes of Practice and CQC.
  • To ensure practice is consistent with NMC/HPC/HCPC Code of Conduct.
  • To ensure resources are used to maximum effect and revenue capture is assured.
  • To maintain good communications with all departments within organisation and NHS Trust.
  • To provide hands on clinical duties to support the services including scrub, circulating and recovery duties.
  • To help identify, plan and project lead service development opportunities in order to grow the volume and profitability of the service in line with targets set by the Hospital Management Team.
  • To liase with bookings to ensure that the appropriate patient levels are allocated to theatre lists.
  • To act as the patients advocate when necessary.
  • To lead, participate and contribute in regular unit meetings.
  • To manage the theatre department in the absence of the Theatre Manager.
  • To liaise with the Theatre Manager and Quality Assurance Lead Nurse to identify any shortfalls in the clinical environments, and to put steps in place to address any issues.
  • To formulate theatre policies and procedures and ensure same are ratified and updated each year in accordance with Hospital Policy.
  • To attend Head of Department meetings, Clinical Governance, Health & Safety meetings and disseminate information in the absence of the Theatre Manager.
  • Maintain written records of objectives, action plans and evaluation of programmes.
  • To assist in the development of an effective recruitment and retention strategy in order to maintain a quality workforce.

Essential Criteria:

Education and Qualification
 Registered Nurse Part 1 or equivalent ODP qualification
 Evidence of Continual Professional Development
Knowledge and experience required to do the job
 Proven track record of project leadership/ management
 5 years relevant experience in theatre with at least 2 years at a senior level
 Experience of effectively building and managing a team
 Experience of undertaking Appraisals/Appraisal training
 Sound knowledge of Clinical Governance + Risk Management
 A working knowledge of CQC regulations and requirements
Specific Technical/Specialist skills to do the job
 All clinical duties including scrub, circulating and recovery
 Ability to teach all grades of staff
 Management of theatre department
 Lead a theatre list
Personal attributes required to do the job

Desirable Criteria:

Education and Qualification
 Diploma in Operating Theatre Technique
 Studying or have a relevant degree
 Recognised Management Qualification
Knowledge and experience required to do the job
 Previous experience in the Independent Sector
Specific Technical/Specialist skills to do the job
 Excellent customer care and marketing skills
